Maldives Human Rights Commission President condemns the use of torture

The President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, Mr Ahmed Saleem has condemned the use of torture, stating that "it is nothing less than a national disgrace that Maldivians are still regularly being tortured. I cannot imagine anyone condoning this despicable and shameful act." In his comments at a meeting organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Human Rights Day, 10 December 2006,

Mr Saleem said that the Commission had regularly received reports of torture over the past three years and that it was investigating complaints of torture as a matter of urgency. The new membership of the Commission was constituted by the President of the Maldives on 27 November 2006, with Mr Saleem appointed as President and Mr Mohamed Zahid as Vice President. The Commission was originally established on 10 December 2003.
